RatchetxDrift

You know, when it was first revealed in Lost light #24 that Ratchet and Drift had fallen in love with each other I was pissed. I did NOT like this ship and when James Roberts said he had basically just let it happen without even planning it, it felt to me like he wanted to get one more canon, married gay couple in before Hasbro axed the series (fuck you, Hasbro). And then in the next issue we learn they did marry and had a happy marriage before Ratchet's spark finally gave out (that's a whole other long ass blog post).
I continued to hate the ship and be against it (still against Arcee and Aileron), but I recently re-read all the IDW G1 TF (2005) series and upon further analyzing... Now I see the sense.
Ratchet was tired and wanted to retire. He wanted to just say "fuck it" and walk away once and for all. So, he was training First Aid to be his replacement, but of course the war ended, but there was still drama... But all he wanted was to stop seeing his friends die, stop seeing mechs who basically were like his children he had cared for since the orbital cycle they had first onlined be ripped to shreds and die in his arms. To hear their last faint intakes of air before their spark faded...
He's desperate to just leave it all behind. But, he doesn't have money, no place to go... I mean, being the Prime's best friend and the Chief Medical Officer of the Autobot army means you get whatever the fuck you want without Shanix involved. And now suddenly you want to leave the army, Prime is off doing... Something so can't pay your utility bills... What is a grumpy, old mech to do?
He finds himself a boyfriend who is LOADED. Loaded and HAWT.
Drift is insanely rich, but won't say how (bounty hunting and pillaging when he was a Decepticon officer are the hinted at likely reasons), but the dude bought a fucking spaceship the size of a town for a billion Shanix on the spot. And had enough money to give 200 crew members enough to spend on shore leave at an alien city. And still is loaded.
Ratchet is a gold digger. He found his retirement fund in a set of thighs and also a bodyguard who can protect him from anyone and keep youngins off his yard.
Plus, Drift is quiet, respectful, and knows when to take things seriously (unlike his ex).
Ratchet, you sly, old dog. I get it, now. I get it.
