Review of "Transformers: The Last Knight"
***Originally Posted June 28, 2017*** So, I saw Transformers: The Last Knight. And honestly, it wasn't what I expected. Well, I did expect a lot of things that happened, but it wasn't really that bad. It did have good elements to it. Now, as a hardcore Transformers fan, it did sadly miss the best that the Transformers world has to offer and did screw up some characters, but also looking at it as someone who has ONLY seen Bayformers would have, it wasn't a complete turn off. So, the good things about this film: - Megatron is back with Frank Welker as the voice actor. Frank has done Meg's voice for over 30 years and owns that character. Other voice actors have given us great Megatrons before, such as Corey Burton (sexy voice Megs from TF:A) and Hugo Weaving, but you can tell Frank knows this character best, loves portraying him, and he will always be that original Megatron. - Megatron says, "Decepticons, retreat!" - Original Transformation sound from the G1 cartoon was used towards the end - The storyline was better written then in some previous Bayformer films, in regard to not spending most of the time on boring human drama. Cybertronians were present in almost every single scene, as we want from a film about robots. - Cogman was spectacular. He was definitely a good character to put in the film, wasn't annoying, and he even spun around when walking a dog as I do when Maggie walks behind me. - The CGI was beautiful, and wonderfully done. Most camera angles were very well thought out. - No bathroom humor, and lots of actually GOOD sex jokes that were not directed to robots. While the comics have confirmed they have their own version of sex, Bay screws it all up in the films by adding things not needed. - They had a lot of blood and more realistic fight for King Arthur. And a drunk Merlin was funny. Now, the bad: - Dialogue needed work, especially for Optimus. He had a lot of lame lines. And when saying the name of the character, it was sometimes too stressed. There are other ways to introduce characters that don't sound forced. - Bumblebee and all Autobots lived. No deaths from them, only from the Decepticons, which is annoying because in the reality of war, people die on both sides. - They showed polo being played which has a lot of horse abuse. Fuck polo. - They didn't explain how Galvatron became Megatron again, or how Megs got his new body. Nor did they explain how Unicron became Earth. Assuming they are doing what TF: Prime did with Unicron being Earth, they could have given a brief explaination of how him floating in space became covered in dirt and eventually Earth. There were other loose ends not fully explained. - Hot Rod had a French accent that he hated but couldn't get rid of. Why? And Bumblebee's voice did come back, but he used it only once before going back to radio voice. Why? - Nemesis Prime was reverted back too quickly and easily. Prime should have died...
- Again, they needed a human to save the day. Why would Cybertronians require organics to have to save them?
- Even though robots were in almost every scene, they still showed a lot of humans.
- Why did ancient Cybertronians gift Merlin control over them so easily? Not much backstory onto how they had that trust there. Needed more information there.
- Starscream stayed dead. They showed his decapitated helm. Why does Megs get to come back but not him?
- Onslaught died in the first fight he got into and only had one line.
- Unicron never showed nor dismembered any planet. And Cybertron still is screwed over.
- A lot of scientific shit they got wrong from the close proximity of planets, the moon being destroyed, the whole explosions, flying around, all that shit is not scientifically accurate.
- Baby dinobots
- Cybertronians continue to be given very human-like faces with nostrils.
There's a lot more to the film, but I don't want to make this the longest critique ever. It's not the best like the comics. Nothing will ever compare to those unless they make a TV series of it, but it wasn't a film to just hate for no reason other than Bay directing it. Remember that he didn't write the screenplay. So, no sexy gay robots making out, sadly. I will have to enjoy that in the comics as usual. But it was a decent film. Saddest thing when Optimus speaks you can hear how old Peter Cullen is getting and it makes me sad. DON'T YOU DARE DIE, PETER! But we now know the purpose for Stonehenge. Finally...
